Getting Back on the Horse

Hello Blog. It’s been a while.

I did the ‘reflection’ class yesterday. In the introduction to the lesson I talked about the struggles that many tutors have with reflective practice. Tutors that say ‘I reflect all the time’ while rolling their eyes at the term. The post-PGCE-ers who bemoan the ‘reflecting on reflecting on my reflections’.

I told them how hearing these issues resonate with me, because I remember doing it. The memory of my PGCE was writing a reflective journal, all in one sitting, just to have something the ‘hand in’. I remember being at specialist conference having a box to fill in to reflect on the day and rolling my eyes. I remember Schon and not really understanding what he meant by ‘reflecting-in-action’ and ‘reflecting-on-action’.

I then told them how I delivered the Reflection sessions on the DT(E)LLS courses and at some point I was called Cathy ‘reflection’ Clarkson. At some point I ‘got it’, and in today’s lesson I wanted to enthuse them about reflective practice too and to encourage them to try ‘thinking through their fingers’ so that at the end of their two year course they will have experience of the impact of being reflective practitioners.

So here I am. Picking up my blog.

Although I haven’t been writing here this year I have been writing. I undertook an Education and Training Foundation funded Practitioner Research project, through emCETT,  last year and created a blog to disseminate my finding. I really really enjoyed the process of pulling my report together in this format. I learnt a lot about my project through the process of writing and thinking about how to structure the blog. As Steve Wheeler says here, blogging helped me crystalise my thinking and the process of drafting and re-drafting helped make my thoughts and ideas concrete.

The upshot of this is that I need to carve time and space to sit and write.

And then have the courage to press ‘publish’.
