The warm up activity for week three of the corpus linguistics MOOC is:

‘Go to an online news website or get a copy of a newspaper you are familiar with.

Browse through it to find an article in which refugees, migrants or asylum seekers are mentioned. Read the article making notes about how the refugees, migrants or asylum seekers are talked about. I resisted the temptation to head straight for The Daily Mail/ Express, who are both so well known for their love of ‘foreigners’ and decided to stick to the letter of the task and choose a paper I am familiar with. As I previously said, I’m learning that watching video lectures is problematic for me – so this morning I have skimmed through all the transcripts of lectures for week 2, while simultaneously completing the quiz. Not surprisingly, I got 100% on my first attempt! Although, I will admit that some of the questions were tricky and it took some unpicking of the terminology to figure out which could be the correct answer. Read more ►

On your marks …..

It has been six weeks since the high #learnpod13, my discovery of Edcanvas & all my excitement about having a long summer to think and reflect. Plans of blogging these thoughts have clearly not materialised as I have fully embraced  non-workness and thoroughly indulged in  experiencing the beautiful sunshine in the company of my Boisterous Boy.

Although my dreams have been dominated by showing up to my first 16-18 ESOL class with no plan, when my waking thoughts have turned to work I’ve found myself pondering the CELTA. I feel that the course was a little neglected last year as I was so focused on the new Tech for Learning Delivery course. Read more ►

I am on a complete high from attending my second unconference today. Thoughts on the day:

Things that I knew already:

  • I like to go first. I was the first to pitch and thankfully in the first slot of the day.
  • The world is made of amazing people and I have the pleasure of having these amazing people in my PLN.
  • Meeting face to face is invaluable. Technology can enhance these relationships but face to face rules.
  • Socrative, Educreations and Show Me are good apps to have on a class set of iPads Read more ►

Edcanvas, online quizzes & sunshine

The Teacher Ed department at college have agreed to trial running parts of the induction next year as blended learning, particularly around the use of the social media sites Twitter and Yammer.

Starting with the Twitter Induction, I started looking last week at using the Lesson function within Moodle. On my love-hate relationship spectrum with Moodle I was certainly very very close to the ‘hate’ end. I spent what felt like a good chunk of the afternoon structuring the resources and activities within the Lesson but it didn’t fit right and I was really struggling to get it to work. Granted, I have only ever made two Lessons in Moodle before, and that was over a year ago so it was really back to basics. But it was hard. Read more ►

About six months ago I decided to take a break from Facebook. I was finding that I was distracted by it and it was a very convenient procrastination tool. I was also becoming increasingly conscious of my online presence and digital footprint and wanted to think about the role of my Facebook account in this. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t go cold turkey – I still liked being able to see what my friends were sharing, but I retreated and became more of a lurker.

Conferences, expectations & ponderings #rscinspire13

I think the way that I attend conferences is changing. Tutors on my Tech for Learning Delivery course were laughing last week at just how many conferences I’ve attended – and I suppose as an FE tutor, it probably is quite rare to have such opportunities.

Recently, I attended the RSC-YH e-learning conference in Leeds. I’ve been a fairly regular attender and presenter at this event over the years, and although I had the usual pre-conference nerves as I approached the venue, it was really lovely to walk in and recognise, and be recognised, by friendly faces.

A Big Question: What is the ideal ratio of teachers to students?

I caught up with the recording of the #ocTEL induction webinar today, where Diana Laurillard categorises some of the Big Questions that are being asked by those participating in this MOOC.

In one section she talks about a 1:25 ratio, of teacher:students. I thought this was kind of interesting and raised a few questions for me. Does this mean no more than 25 students in a class or that a tutor has no more than 25 students in their tutorial group? What time scale are we talking here? For example, I don’t have more than 25 students in any of my classes, but I could have up to 3 different groups of students at any one time, so at times I teach over 40 students.

It’s been almost a year since I took part in my first MOOC – the First Steps MOOC, but the memory of being initially completely over-whelmed by the experience is still very clear. But I am up for a challenge, and as I am currently in the process of completing an LSIS funded Research and Development Followship project, where I am looking at what and how HE tutors and students can learn from each other about mobile technology, then this seems like as a good a time as any to join my second MOOC.

I have been blogging for many many year (yikes – since 2005!) in many many different guises. I’ve blogged about my MA, about teaching, about my practitioner research activities; I’ve used blogs in action research, and had numerous class blogs, for CELTA, DTELLS, PTLLS, different ESOL groups & currently with the Technology for Learning Delivery course.
